Emergency Water Damage Tips

Having a water damage in your home can be an extremely frustrating experience. Not knowing what to do and what not to do can add even more frustration. Below we have listed some tips that will help you take the proper action until your SERVPRO professionally trained water damage technician arrives.

Follow these DO's and DONT's to reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration.

Emergency Water Damage Recommended Tips
  • Try and Remove as much of the excess water as you can by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after you have removed the items on top.
  • Move wet upholstery and pillow cushions to a dry location and prop them up for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer months.
  • Remove area rugs from wet wall-to-wall carpets.
  • Remove valuable paintings and art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Open and place luggage in sunlight to dry, if possible.
  • Gather as many loose items from the floors as possible making a safe work environment.
Emergency Water Damage Not Recommended Tips
  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place; dry as soon as possible. Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets.
  • Never use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use TVs or other household appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially on wet concrete floors.
  • Never turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.
