Emergency Fire & Smoke Damage Tips

Fire damages are one of the most destructive and frustrating events any homeowner can experience. Since they are not expected, knowing what to do is not common knowledge. In the unfortunate event that you have fire, smoke, or soot damage to your home we have listed some tips that will help you take the proper action until your SERVPRO professionally trained Fire & Smoke damage estimator arrives.

Follow these DO's and DONT's to reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration.

  • Blow or brush-vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpets.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim, and appliances with a light coating of Vaseline or oil.
  • Pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, and tubs if heat is off during freezing season.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.
